No-one can accuse the UK's grocery retailers of being slow to cash in on a cliché, and spring cleaning is no exception.

As March heralds the beginning of spring, the number of cleaning promotions has rocketed. Anyone planning to indulge in a spot of spring cleaning this week would have 78 featured space offers to choose from, as the category rocketed from 11th to 3rd.

Tesco topped the cleaning league, with 26 deals, while Waitrose was close behind with 23. Cif and Harpic were the most-promoted brands, with 16 deals apiece.

Discounts were steep, with 32 of the deals offering half price or less. Anyone buying all 78 deals would clean up - literally - with a saving of £73.90, or 34%, on the original £216.90 retail price tag.

Rapid though cleaning's ascent was, though, it didn't come close to challenging the dominance of confectionery and wine in the top two spots. Confectionery held on to the number one spot for a second week, despite a slight decrease in the number of offers.

The total number of featured space deals was up, however, from 1,700 last week to 1,800.

The best offer in this week's top 50 table was on Bernard Matthews turkey breast at Morrisons, reduced to £1 for a 66.2% saving.

The biggest cash saving was once again found on Asda's 3-for-£10 wine deal, reduced from £23.94.

A shopper buying all 50 of this week's top offers would pay £164.39, pocketing a £150.75 saving from the rsp of £315.14.
