Tesco has bought an extra 40 tonnes of British raspberries after a bumper crop caused by recent good weather.
The supermarket said its supplier Berry Gardens had experienced a bumper crop of the Driscoll Maravilla raspberry variety at its growing sites in Herefordshire, Kent, Staffordshire and Scotland.
“The wonderful weather we’ve experienced across the UK has meant that our British raspberry crop has come-on in bigger volumes than we’d forecast,” said berries buyer Jordan Blanford.
”We want to support our British farmers and stop any raspberries from going to waste on farms,” he added. ”So to help our homegrown suppliers, Tesco has bought an extra 40 tonnes of British raspberries to help growers use the bumper crop of fruit created.”
The retailer is offering larger 425g boxes of the fruit for £3, with the raspberries expected to be in stores for up to two weeks.
In the past 12 months, Tesco said it had been able to take bumper crops of strawberries, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, lettuce and celery, and offer customers the best prices as well as prevent good food from going to waste.
