Aduna is looking to develop a moringa energy bar on the back of soaring interest in the superfood.

The health and beauty brand said it had seen sales of its Moringa Green Superleaf Powder soar in the three months following its launch into Planet Organic, Whole Foods Market, Liberty and Selfridges.

The nutrient-dense green super-ingredient, which is made from the leaf of the moringa tree, and contains 13 vitamins and minerals at RDA levels, according to Aduna, is almost 25% plant protein and rich in antioxidants. The powder can be sprinkled into smoothies or added to salads and, unlike spirulina or chlorella, has a “palatable, spinachy” taste, according to Aduna co-founder Andrew Hunt.

Planet Organic health and bodycare buyer Scarlett Knight said moringa powder had become one of the fastest-selling superfoods in the retailer’s stores. “Moringa’s exceptional health properties and pleasant taste combined with the current high demand for green superfoods means it is the right product at the right time,” she said.

Aduna also this week rolled out its Baobab Raw Energy Bar (rsp: £1.89). The launch builds on the success of Aduna’s baobab powder, which the supplier claimed had been the best-selling supplement of 2013 in Planet Organic and Whole Foods Market. The organic gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free bar is made entirely from fruit and nuts, and contains two teaspoons of baobab powder.

Aduna is now looking at taking moringa into a similar format.
