The Morrisons Foundation is donating £45,000 to the Community Fridge Network as it looks to expand from 31 locations to 58 by November.
The fridge projects, run by environmental charity Hubbub, sit within the heart of a community and are stocked with edible surplus food from local businesses and households. They are open to everyone in the community to access.
On average each community fridge currently in the network is redistributing 525kg a month, meaning more than 30 tonnes of food per month will be saved from waste by November.
Morrisons stores have already been regularly donating edible surplus food to community fridges in Sheffield, Frome and Shildon (Durham) and will aim to set up close partnerships with five new stores.
“We are delighted to support The Community Fridge network and their efforts to ensure that more edible surplus food is redistributed rather than thrown away,” said the Morrisons Foundation David Scott.
Andrew Woffindin, who co-ordinates the community fridge at the University of Sheffield, said: “We are delighted to have Morrisons as a major contributor of food to our community fridge here at the University of Sheffield. The partnership provides the opportunity for students and people in our local community who have a limited budget to make fresh meals with food that would otherwise have gone to waste.”
Hubbub CEO Trewin Restorick said: “Every community should have a community fridge. It’s a wonderfully simple way to stop fresh food from going to waste and it’s fantastic to see organisations like the Morrisons Foundation supporting the Community Fridge Network. With more investment and support from big businesses, we can make sure so much more fresh food is enjoyed and not destroyed.”
