Marks & Spencer is putting some of its sparkling wines in lighter bottles in an effort to cut down on packaging. The retailer claims the move will save hundreds of tonnes of glass a year.

Bottles of Prosecco and the pink Prosecco Raboso now weigh 15% less, as do sparklers Buck’s Fizz and Peach Bellini. The bottles of some premium non-fizzy wines, including Chablis and Sancerre, are also being light-weighted as part of the overhaul.

A feasibility study conducted by Wrap quashed concerns that lighter bottles would explode under the pressure of sparkling wine, or that consumers would view them as denoting an inferior product.
