Shaw led the return of the famous Asda ‘pocket tap’ and its ‘that’s Asda price’ strapline and introduced a new family to front the campaign

Asda chief customer officer Anna-Maree Shaw is leaving after less than a year in the role at the supermarket giant.

Shaw, who this year led the relaunch of Asda Price, will stand down from the supermarket at the end of 2020.

In an announcement shared with colleagues by CEO Roger Burnley today, the Asda boss said Shaw would be returning to her native Australia, where her family – including two children – are still based.

Shaw came in at the start of the year to replace Walmart veteran Andy Murray, who returned to the US after four years in the role.

She previously held senior commercial roles at Sainsbury’s before going on to launch her own company, Customer Dialogue, in Australia.

In September Shaw led the return of the famous Asda ‘pocket tap’ and its ‘that’s Asda price’ strapline, when she introduced a new family to follow in the footsteps of Julie Walters, Richard Beckinsale and Michael Owen in fronting the campaign.

Sunny, his wife Amy and their three children have also since featured in Asda’s Christmas ads, which Shaw has also overseen.

Asda is yet to announce a replacement for Shaw but said its chief strategy officer, Preyash Thakrar, would provide leadership support to its customer division. He will work with VP of creative and marketing, Eilidh MacAskill, who has been with the business for six years, and VP of proposition and planning Matt McLellan, who joined Asda in April.

Burnley said: “As you know, Anna joined in January this year, before Covid disrupted our lives, both professionally and personally and for Anna this has meant that she has not been able to see her family in Australia for many months.

“Anna has led the customer division throughout this incredibly challenging year and developed our new customer strategy, a strategy which will transform the way we engage with our customers and support the delivery of our discount platform ambition.

“We are very grateful for everything that Anna has done over the last 12 months and we wish her the very best for the future.”
