Phillips was made MD of Matthew Clark after it was bought by C&C Group

David Phillips has stepped down as MD of Matthew Clark, The Grocer has learned.

Phillips first served as the wholesaler’s finance director until 2016, when he left to join online retailer Not On The High Street as CFO.

When Matthew Clark’s former owner, Conviviality, dramatically collapsed in 2018 and was snapped up by Magners owner C&C Group, Phillips rejoined as MD.

Prior to joining Matthew Clark in 2007, he held roles at Constellation Europe and Danisco Animal Nutrition.

It is understood Matthew Clark’s executive chairman Steve Thompson is taking on a wider role with Phillips’ departure.

The wholesaler has also hired Martin Grisman as COO. Grisman, like Phillips, worked for Matthew Clark in the past as services director, but most recently served as a director for EVO Business Supplies.

The Grocer has approached Phillips for comment.

It comes as financial results filed with Companies House this week reveal Matthew Clark & Bibendum has returned to the black.

It posted pre-tax profits of £1.8m for the period spanning 30 April 208 to 28 February 2019, compared with a £154.9m loss for the period from 1 May 2017 to 29 April 2018. Operating profits were up from £2.1m to £10.1m.
