David Salkeld

Former Symington’s and Arla Foods UK CEO David Salkeld has been appointed chairman of the Wensleydale Creamery.

Salkeld replaces Matthew Gribbin who has stepped down after 10 years in the role.

The announcement comes 15 months after Salkeld left his role at Symington’s after nine years. He will be charged with spearheading growth for the brand, which employs more than 230 staff across two sites, supplying retailers and manufacturers throughout the UK and globally.

“It’s no secret that the dairy industry is a really challenging one, and we will continue to work hand-in-hand with all partners to ensure that we are focused to deliver, and maximise the wealth of opportunities that are available domestically and abroad,” said Salkeld.

Salkeld has more than 25 years’ worth of experience in director-level roles in food and dairy, said a Wensleydale spokeswoman. This also included a stint as MD of Northern Dairies and as non-executive director at food redistributor Company Shop.

Wensleydale Creamery MD David Hartley added: “We’re delighted to welcome David on board. A demonstrated leader with a wealth of experience, David will be instrumental in our future as he helps us to develop strategic opportunities, bringing new thinking and guidance to assist in the development and delivery of our ambitious growth strategy.”

The appointment follows the company’s recent £5m investment in a new dairy at Hawes and cheese-making facilities. The development allowed the company to increase its capacity, it said, and drive further growth with whey processing facilities to secure value from by-products of its core cheese business.
