Getir’s new US general manager Kristof Van Beveren

Rapid grocer Getir’s UK chief Kristof Van Beveren is now leading the company’s US operations.

Van Beveren said the US general manager role was a new position, and one to which he was “incredibly honoured and thrilled to announce” he had been appointed.

In a public message to his US colleagues, Van Beveren said he was “privileged to lead this team into the future as we build and grow our world-class services nationwide”.

“Combining the best of Getir and Gorillas, we will evolve our proposition, endeavour for flawless delivery, and grow our markets – the opportunity to win is ours,” he added.

Van Beveren joined Getir as deputy general manager UK in December 2021, and was promoted in May last year. Prior to Getir he was CEO and executive chairman of one-time Getir rival Weezy, which he co-founded in 2020.

Getir in late 2021 announced it was to acquire Weezy, in a move it said “solidifies Getir’s long-term commitment to the UK market”.

Van Beveren’s UK leadership role is being filled by Christopher Chaaya, who joined Getir earlier this month as the result of Getir’s acquisition of rival Gorillas.

Chaaya had led Gorillas in the UK as general manager since shortly after its arrival in the UK in 2021.

Getir launched operations in the US in late 2021, in New York, Chicago and Boston. Last year, its plan to expand into more US cities – including Miami – were reported. However, those plans were almost immediately shelved last summer, when the company reduced its global headcount by 14%.

Stateside, Getir’s main rapid rival is Gopuff – which also has a presence in the UK and Europe. Gorillas – which Getir acquired in December – had been operating in New York since early last year.
