Aldi has launched ‘colleague shops’ in its regional distribution centres across the country as a way of tackling food waste.
The shops in Aldi’s 11 UK RDCs will allow staff to buy food that is still safe to eat but can no longer be sold in stores. It will also prevent an estimated 240 tonnes of food per year from going to waste, according to Aldi.
The initiative is rolling out following a trial at Aldi’s Darlington RDC.
“The colleague shop is another example of how we’re working to cut food waste across our operations,” said Aldi UK national sustainability director Luke Emery.
“It’s a practical initiative that benefits both colleagues and the environment, and we’re pleased to extend it nationwide following a successful pilot.”
Tesco has been running a similar initiative since 2018, though its ‘colleague shops’ are in all of its UK stores, and staff can take the food for free if a charity or community group has not. It’s open to every member of staff with a Colleague Clubcard, either from 9pm or an hour prior to store closure.
Aldi is aiming to reduce its food waste levels by 90% by 2030, against a 2017 baseline.
