Aldi has become the second supermarket this year to offer Christmas veg for 8p each.
From 18 December, Aldi will be selling white potatoes (2kg), carrots (1kg), parsnips (500g), red and white cabbages, sprouts and swedes all at 8p each.
The festive 8p range will be Aldi’s weekly promotional ‘Super Six’ fruit & veg lines for the week.
Lidl is also offering six Christmas veg lines at 8p each, starting from 19 December. Four of the lines – potatoes, carrots, parsnips and sprouts – are part of a festive feast for eight put together by Lidl for £11.85.
Aldi has yet to announce its own full Christmas dinner offer with prices.
Asda, Aldi and Lidl all ended up offering Christmas veg lines for 8p last year, but only after a day of fierce under-cutting that brought prices down from 15p.
Aldi said it paid farmers fixed prices that were not affected by seasonal promotions.
Aldi UK & Ireland CEO Giles Hurley said shoppers were “anxious” about how today’s budget would affect their finances and “many families have been cautious about spending”.
“We want to take the guess work out of affordability by locking in the lowest prices now – whatever cost pressures come our way – on Christmas dinner veggies, turkey and the trimmings, to make Christmas as affordable as possible,” he said.
A survey of 2,000 people carried out for Aldi by OnePoll in November found 23% were adopting a ‘less is more’ attitude to shopping, streamlining the variety of products in their baskets.
