Asda has revealed its latest vision for its supermarkets, with the renovation of its store in Harrogate.
The new “simpler, more intuitive” layout aims to “modernise” and improve the “overall shopping experience” for Asda customers, and will set the blueprint for future store renovations under Allan Leighton’s turnaround plan.
More of an evolution than a revolution, it includes new feature lighting and much clearer “modern” in-store signage to highlight key categories, including ‘Fruit & veg’, ‘Bed’ and ‘Food to go’.
The biggest change customers will notice is a brand-new George Home and General merchandise department, as the retailer looks to double down its non-food strengths. It includes new-look fixturing as well as giving greater space to highlight the supermarket’s commercial partnerships, with the likes of TV star Stacey Solomon.
Asda has also upgraded its fruit & veg department with new cabinet fixtures designed to improve availability on the shop floor. The beers, wines and spirits section has been expanded, its instore bakery “revamped” and its health & beauty department given a “glow up”.
Harrogate – which reopened this week – is the first of seven Asda stores set to receive a combined £12m investment before 1 December, under a plan announced in August to rejuvenate store standards in Asda’s home county of Yorkshire and surrounding areas.
Stores in Pudsey, Keighley and Kingswood are set to reopen next week, following a combined £7.2m investment into Yorkshire supermarkets. Asda is spending a further £4.6m upgrading two stores in Grimsby, Lincolnshire and in Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham.
“We’re so excited to welcome customers into our newly upgraded Harrogate store – the first to get an upgrade as part of our £12m investment across Yorkshire and nearby areas,” said Asda chief commercial officer for retail and non-food Liz Evans.
“Asda started here 60 years ago, so putting money back into our home patch really means a lot to us. We want our stores to feel fresh, easy to shop, and full of great value for local families. This is just the start – we can’t wait to unveil more upgraded Yorkshire stores over the next few weeks.”
Asda has also kickstarted its efforts on the convenience front, with the opening of 20 new Asda Express stores throughout October, also announced in August.
