Deliveroo has launched a more sustainable takeaway box for UK restaurants to replace conventional plastic-lined containers.
The new packaging, which rolled out to the rapid delivery firm’s webstore last week, was created as part of a three-way partnership between Deliveroo, packaging producer Biopack and Sheffield Hallam University.
The partnership was formed as part of Deliveroo’s first Sustainable Packaging Challenge in 2024, which challenged apprenticeship students on the Professional Packaging BSc to create an innovative, sustainable and cost-effective design to prevent spillages and maintain food at the right temperature.
The winning design, created by apprentices Josephine Shaw and William Shaw, features a new sealing system which uses additional folds in the cardboard to create a more secure locking mechanism.
“We are constantly seeking innovative solutions to global challenges,” said Deliveroo head of packaging Jen Bagshaw. “Partnering with the talented apprentices at Sheffield Hallam University has been an inspiring journey, allowing us to champion the next generation of sustainable packaging designers.
“By providing the platform and financial backing to turn the students’ creative vision into a reality, we are thrilled to see this solution officially launch on our webstore for our partners to purchase.”
Deliveroo is not the only supplier to have rolled out more sustainable packaging as of late. Earlier this week, foodservice packaging brand Eco-Products unveiled plans to officially launch its range of reusable, recyclable and compostable packaging in the UK.
The brand, which provides environmentally responsible products across stadiums, universities, cafés and caterers, will roll out its packaging through its sister company, Edinburgh-based Vegware.
