Lidl is adding a self-scanning feature to its loyalty app to save shoppers time at the checkouts.

The feature will allow Lidl Plus app users to scan items as they pick up their shopping around the store. They can then simply scan the app again at a self-checkout and pay to complete the purchase.

From September, the new feature will be tested in a “friends and family trial” across four stores, ahead of a phased rollout next year.

“This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution,” said Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell.

“Integrated into Lidl Plus, it’s designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop.

“We’re investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences. Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.”

The Grocer revealed Lidl was exploring scan and shop as long ago as 2021, when it briefly made an ‘early access’ version of a dedicated app available on app shops, called Lidl Go

Then in October last year, The Grocer reported how Lidl was adding scan and shop to its loyalty app in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland, ahead of an anticipated rollout to other European territories.

Lidl – which won Grocer of the Year at The Grocer Gold Awards last night – introduced its Lidl Plus loyalty app in the UK in 2020.

The app has since grown to be hugely popular, offering customers personalised discounts on their next shop, as well as exclusive member prices on a weekly rotating selection of products.
