Marks & Spencer has appointed Asda and Tesco veteran Hayley Tatum as its new chief people officer.

Tatum was chief people officer at Asda from 2011 until April this year. She held senior HR positions at Tesco from 2002 to 2011, including personnel director for its UK & Ireland operations.

She is due to start at M&S in October and join the retailer’s executive committee. She will spend her first weeks working in stores and distribution centres, a standard part of the induction process for senior M&S hires.

Meanwhile, Sarah Findlater, who has been M&S people director for three years and worked at the retailer for 27, is to leave this autumn.

Revealing the moves in a LinkedIn post today, M&S CEO Stuart Machin said: “Having worked with Sarah closely for the last three years, she has been an absolute joy to work with, an incredibly hard worker and someone who cares deeply about M&S and our colleagues. Sarah will leave as a long-term friend of the company and with my sincere thanks.”

Machin added: “Having worked with Hayley previously, I know that she has a very hands-on and collaborative leadership style, crafted through her many roles over the years in HR and store operations. We have lots to do in the years ahead to transform M&S and importantly become even closer to our customers and closer to our colleagues.

“So, a very heartfelt thank you to Sarah and a warm welcome to Hayley.”
