Ailing Dutch supermarket chain Laurus plunged further into the red revealing an 11% drop in interim sales as it continued to suffer from lower sales in its troubled Spanish and Belgian operations.
For the half-year ended June 30 sales fell to E2,865m from E3,229m in 2001. Interim pre-tax loss amounted to E67m compared to a loss of E35m for the same period last year.
Sales of the three preferred Dutch Laurus fascia ÂSuper De Boer, Edah and Konmar  rose 0.7% to E2,104m compared to the total Dutch market for food products which showed growth of 6.2%.

Franco-Spanish tobacco company Altadis reported a 5% rise in interim sales to E1.5bn helped by cost savings and price increases.
A 7.2% jump in earnings to E457.3m before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation improved on forecasts.

French supermarket retailer Casino said first half net profit grew 19% and it would open 30 new Leader Price stores in France this year, along with three new hypermarkets.
Net profit to June 30 was E177.5m up from E149.4m last year on sales that rose to E11.03bn from E10.37bn. Operating profit grew 13% to E401.5m from E356.2m in 2001.
The retailer said its French stores generated a 15% increase in operating profit with gains of 31% at its Leader Price chains.

Interbrew said it had reached an agreement with Diageo to transfer all import and distribution rights for Bass Ale in the US to Interbrew.
Bass Ale is a high-margin brand which accounts for more than 25% of all super-premium imported beers in the US, and which will occupy a "unique role" in Interbrew's portfolio.
