Deliveroo’s new CEO Miki Kuusi

The founder of European delivery player Wolt has been named as the new CEO of Deliveroo, following the formal completion of its acquisition by Doordash.

Miki Kuusi – one of six founders of Wolt, which was taken over by Doordash in 2022 – will take up the Deliveroo CEO role, in addition to his existing role as head of international at DoorDash. Kuusi will be relocating to London in the coming months.

DoorDash co-founder and CEO, Tony Xu, in an open letter published this morning, said that the acquisition marked “the beginning of a new chapter, not the end of an old one”.

The US food delivery giant announced it was to acquire Deliveroo for £2.9bn in May, after the boards of both companies reached agreement on the deal.

Xu emphasised that the Deliveroo brand would remain, stating that “the Deliveroo app and products you know and love aren’t going anywhere”.

The company’s intention, he continued, was to make the user experience “even faster, smarter, and more delightful”.

To Deliveroo’s network of around 178,000 merchants, Xu said the company aimed to introduce more tools to help businesses “thrive both online and offline”. To the platform’s 130,000 riders, Xu said Doordash would protect “flexibility” while committing to “better mapping and new support and protections to make delivering easier, safer, and more secure”.

Kuusi’s appointment comes after it was announced last month that founder and CEO of Deliveroo, Will Shu, would be stepping down from the role after 13 years, following the acquisition.

“Having known Will and others from the Deliveroo team for many years, I’ve always admired what they have built: a strong brand, a great product, and world-class operations,” Kuusi said.

“I want to thank Will in particular for everything he has done for Deliveroo and the industry as a whole. It’s remarkable what this team has built and accomplished. I couldn’t be more excited to learn from each other as we take our shared mission to the next level.”
