US prebiotic soda giant Olipop looks set to launch in the UK.
Lawyers acting on behalf of Olipop Inc have applied to register the term ‘Olipop: A new kind of soda’ under a class 5 mark covering prebiotic supplements, and a class 32 mark covering carbonated non-alcoholic drinks.
Olipop, which had not responded to The Grocer’s requests for comment at the time of publication, was founded in 2018 by Ben Goodwin and David Lester.
The brand was valued at $1.85bn (£1.36bn) as part of its latest fundraising round, which raised $50m earlier this year. It enjoys widespread distribution in the US and racked up sales of more than $400m in 2024.
Its remarkable rise comes with interest in healthier soft drinks soaring. In March, PepsiCo acquired gut health soda brand Poppi for nearly $2bn.
“As we look to reorient our portfolio offerings to address white-space consumer needs, the Poppi brand’s unique intersection with wellness and culture is a perfect addition to our portfolio,” Ram Krishnan, CEO of PepsiCo Beverages US, said at the time.
Functional drinks are also growing in popularity in the UK. The sub-segment has grown by 26.4% – or £23.8m – to £143.5m in the space of a year [Northstar by Circana 52 w/e 25 January 2025].
The growth was only slightly less than the £24.2m gain recorded by the entire £4.2bn carbonated drinks category over the same period.
