Spirit of Harrogate, the owner of the Slingsby Gin brand, is preparing to appoint administrators.
The Harrogate-based retailer said it had instructed Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency to “assist with placing the company into administration”.
“Unfortunately the business has, like many in its sector, struggled with rising costs and difficult trading conditions in recent years,” said Gareth Lewis, proposed joint-administrator at Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency. “We are now actively marketing the business and assets for sale as a going concern in an attempt to preserve jobs and maximise the return for creditors.”
Spirit of Harrogate was “one of Harrogate’s iconic independent retailers” and the Slingsby Gin product range was “very well respected both locally and nationally”, Lewis added.
Slingsby Gin products including its London Dry, Rhubarb and Marmalade gins are stocked in Waitrose and on Ocado, as well as in specialist retailers including Master of Malt and Amathus Drinks.
The extent of Spirit of Harrogate’s obligations to creditors was not disclosed by the administrators.
According to its latest available financial results on Companies House, the business racked up cumulative losses of almost £5m between 2014 and 28 February 2025.
Spirit of Harrogate presently had five employees – down from 11 when its latest accounts were filed – Lewis Business Recovery & Insolvency said.
It was founded by local entrepreneurs Marcus Black and Mike Carthy in 2014.
