Subway has appointed former Burger King executive Jonathan Fitzpatrick as its new CEO.

Joining the sandwich chain on 28 July, Fitzpatrick brings more than two decades of franchising and quick service restaurant experience to the role.

He previously served in a range of senior leadership positions at Burger King, including executive vice president and chief brand & operations officer. In the role, he led the largest menu overhaul in the brand’s history, simplified restaurant operations and modernised the restaurant’s image.

Fitzpatrick most recently served as president and CEO of automotive services company Driven Brands, where he led a team to 17 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.

“Subway has a solid foundation built on decades of providing freshly made, better-for-you options with value and convenience," said Fitzpatrick.

“I'm excited by the opportunity to shape the future of the company, working alongside our valued franchisees and employees to help drive increased sales and franchisee profitability and grow our brand around the world."

Late last year, Subway confirmed it was on track to open double the number of outlets globally this year, after it took on more than 20 master franchise agreements over the past three years, adding up to more than 10,000 new restaurants.

Seven of 20 agreements were signed last year, including plans to open in Paraguay and Mongolia for the first time. The deals also included plans to significantly expand its presence across France, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Brazil, El Salvador and Guatemala.“
