Tesco is rolling out new technology for shoppers that guides them around their store to pick up items on their shopping list, after checking if they are available and exactly where they are located.

The new function on its Clubcard app will allow shoppers to create lists before they go to a store and use them in conjunction with Tesco’s Scan as you Shop to navigate to one item at a time, in aisle order.

The app shows live stock information for the store selected, including stock levels as well as location.

Tesco said it hoped to roll the technology out to all of the more than 500 stores using its Scan as you Shop service by the end of next month.

Tesco said even when not using Scan as you Shop, customers could access in-store availability and product locations through the app.

Bryan Roberts, senior partner at IGD, said the tool was a “smart” addition by Tesco.

“It creates a store-specific shopping list on the app, which handily tells you if an item is in stock or not,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

“The display can then provide you with your shopping list in aisle order, ticking off items you’ve picked up.

“There’s even a reminder at checkout if you’ve forgotten anything.”

A Tesco spokeswoman told The Grocer: “We are always looking at technology which makes life easier, and through our Tesco app Clubcard customers can build their shopping list ahead of time to use in store with Scan as you Shop.

“This will let customers check the availability and location of products, alongside tracking their spending in real time, view their savings and see their Clubcard Price discounts.”
