Irish bacon processor Oliver Carty is poised to open a £6.95m extension to its existing bacon processing facility ahead of a planned move into the UK multiple retail sector.

The company, one of Ireland’s largest suppliers of own-label bacon products, currently only supplies Irish retailers, but it now has plans to supply the UK multiples. Earlier this year the company secured its first foothold in the UK with a listing in Harrods of its premium range of Oliver Carty branded free-range and organic bacon rashers.

“We are investing £6.95m to create a state-of-the-art processing facility, as we build on the own-label business we have developed,” said managing director Ted Carty.

The new facility, which is expected to be up and running by mid-November, will double production capacity, allowing the company to process 6,000 carcasses a week.
