Bagged snack startup Spare Fruit has welcomed Snaffling Pig co-founder Andrew Allen as a non-executive director.

The brand, which works with UK farmers to turn waste fruit into low-calorie crisps, said Allen had been “a huge supporter of our mission from inception”. He had previously served as an advisor to the business on an informal basis.

Spare Fruit was “delighted to formalise his advisory role at a strategic level” said the brand’s MD, Ben Whitehead. “His all-round industry, brand and marketing expertise will continue to be an immense asset for us at a very exciting time.”

Allen co-founded Snaffling Pig in late 2014, leading all brand and creative output until stepping down at the end of last year. The Spare Fruit announcement represents his first formal move since leaving Snaffling Pig, which produces bagged pork crackling snacks.

The UK’s food & drink startups were “powered by a host of passionate, innovative founders like Ben” Allen said. “The opportunity to join the board and was something I wasn’t going to pass on and I’m hugely excited to support and advise the team as they look to really build the Spare Fruit brand in the next phase of their journey.”

Last week, Spare Fruit – which is chaired by entrepreneur Jamie Hartzell, chairman of Divine Chocolate – secured its first national supermarket listing, rolling into Ocado after smashing its £300k Seedrs target in November to raise almost £421k.
