Counterfeit Spar vodka containing 160 times the legal safe limit of methanol has been seized by police and council officials in North London and Northumbria.
More than 180 bottles of the vodka, which was an imitation of Spar brand Imperial vodka, have been seized from several non-Spar stores in the two regions. The level of methanol was not likely to be lethal, but could have serious health implications, including the risk of blindness.
“The seizure means this batch of potentially harmful imitation is out of circulation,” said Sgt Tony Hub of Northumbria police. “We’re working closely with our partners to try to ensure the public is safe from harm from this substance.”
Spar said it was working with the relevant bodies to deal with the issue and confirmed legitimate supply routes had not been affected.
