Asda claimed its second Grocer 33 pricing win in a row, albeit with a much reduced victory margin.
Last week Asda was a fiver cheaper than its nearest rival Tesco, but at £62.08 this time out it was just £1.40 cheaper than runner-up Morrisons.
The Walmart-owned supermarket offered the lowest price for 22 items, with 10 of these exclusively cheapest. While most of these were just a few pence cheaper than the other retailers, the products that made the biggest difference this week were the black grapes, Uncle Ben’s long grain rice and the BrewDog Dead Pony Club beer.
Morrisons offered the lowest price for 13 products and was exclusively cheapest for the Chicago Town pizza, Patak’s Balti sauce and Schär ciabatta. The total was 4.4% cheaper than it would have been a month ago, thanks to Morrisons ramping up promo activity.
Morrisons had deals on 14 of the products on our list, the highest number of any of the retailers this week. Tesco was close behind with 12, Asda had 10 offers and Sainsbury’s nine, while only four of the products were on deal at Waitrose.
Sainsbury’s took third spot this week. Its £64.72 total was £2.64 more expensive than its proposed merger partner Asda. It was exclusively cheapest for three lines - the Kellogg’s Just Right cereal, Quaker Oat So simple pot and the Haliborange Fruit Softies.
Tesco, which this week posted a 1.7% increase in like-for-like sales for the year to 5 March, was exclusively cheapest for the Bakers dog treats and the baking potatoes, but came in a distant fourth. At £69.19 the UK’s biggest supermarket was fully £7.11 more expensive than Asda.
Waitrose was even further off the pace. It was £14.06 (or 23%) more expensive than Asda at £76.14.
