Asda returned to winning ways having lost out to Tesco last week.
The Walmart-owned retailer’s £63.18 total was £2.46 cheaper than second-placed Morrisons, as Tesco dropped to fourth spot this week behind Sainsbury’s.
Asda offered the lowest price for 20 of the 33 items, with 11 of these exclusively cheapest.
These included the beef cannelloni, button sprouts, Golden Delicious apples, SWA infant milk and sweetcorn. However it was actually deep discounts on lines such as the Gillette razors, Gold Blend coffee and Villa Maria sauvignon blanc that cemented its victory.
Despite the win, Asda still had to offer our shopper a voucher worth £5.97 off her next shop via the soon-to-be-defunct Asda Price Guarantee. This was based on it not being able to undercut Morrisons by 10%.
Morrisons offered the cheapest price for 11 products. Five of these, the wholemeal bread, Volvic Touch of Fruit, Villa Maria wine, chicken and Bonne Maman conserve were cheaper than any of its rivals. It mainly lost out on the Gillette razors, which at £4 were double the Asda price this week.
Sainsbury’s also had five lines that were exclusively cheapest. These were the Koko dairy-free milk, liver & bacon with mash, McCain Potato Smiles, nectarines and Spontex sponges. Its £67.32 total was £4.14 pricier than Asda.
Tesco was a sizeable £10.82 more expensive than Asda. Its victory last week was largely promotions-led and the end of deals on the razors, wine and Gold Blend meant it was £6.49 more expensive than Asda for just these three lines. Annual inflation on this selection was a sizeable 4.9% - as it was for guest retailer Ocado, which pipped Waitrose for fifth spot, though both were well off the pace. Ocado was £18.17 more expensive than Asda, while Waitrose was £20.74 dearer.
