A sports nutrition company has had to recall bottles of liquid egg whites after salmonella was detected in the product.

Myprotein sold the affected product - a 1kg bottle of own-label free-range liquid egg whites with a best-before date of 8 February 2013 - through its Myprotein and Nutri Centre websites as well as its Nutri Centre stores.

The Health Protection Agency said it had been notified of seven salmonella cases in people who had consumed liquid egg whites from Myprotein, and a sample of the product had tested positive for salmonella.

The affected batch was recalled by the Food Standards Agency, and Myprotein has put up customer notices and a telephone helpline to alert consumers.

This is not the first time a salmonella outbreak has been linked to liquid egg. In 2007, 70 people fell ill after consuming contaminated liquid egg.
