Asda notched up a fourth win in a row as it looks to take a stranglehold on this year’s Grocer 33 pricing award.

With a £67.40 total, Asda came in £2.13 cheaper than second-placed Sainsbury’s and in so doing claimed its ninth victory of the pricing year to date. It is now five wins ahead of Morrisons and has six more than Tesco.

This week, Asda offered the lowest price for 16 of the items on our list, with eight of these exclusively cheaper than any of its rivals. Of these, the products that made the biggest difference for Asda were the half leg of lamb, Cadbury hot chocolate and the Young’s cod fillets.

While the difference between Asda and Sainsbury’s was not huge, the Walmart-owned retailer thoroughly trounced its other main supermarket rivals. It beat Morrisons by £7.58, was £8.51 cheaper than Tesco and came in a whopping £13.55 cheaper than Waitrose. Even so, it still had to offer our shopper as voucher worth £2.27 under the Asda Price Guarantee.

Sainsbury’s surprise second place was largely down to keen prices for the lamb and the L’Oréal Micellar water. The latter, at £4, was £1.97 cheaper than any of its rivals.

Morrisons, meanwhile, had a much higher price for the lamb compared with Asda or Sainsbury’s, and its price of £6.97 for the Ariel Excel gel was almost £3 more expensive than any other retailer.

Our Tesco shopper received an instant discount of £1.47 via Brand Guarantee. This would have risen to £3.18 if she could have bought the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and the Silver Spoon sugar. However, this would still have left Tesco £5.33 more expensive than Asda.

Waitrose’s total was also skewed by a significantly higher per kilo price for the lamb, which at £11.99 was £4 higher than Asda’s price.
