Asda got back to winning ways this week, having been knocked off its perch by guest retailer Iceland last time out.
This was a convincing win for the Walmart-owned retailer, based on consistently low pricing across the board.
Asda’s £81.77 total was £4.45 cheaper than second-placed Morrisons. It offered the lowest price for 24 of the 33 items on our shopping list, with nine of these exclusively cheaper than any of its rivals.
It was the place to go for cheaper fruit & veg with the lowest price for the apples, melon, grapes and chillies. It also beat all of the other retailers on the Jordans Frusli bars, Glenryck pilchards, Birds Eye petits pois, crispy potato slices and organic eggs.
While Asda was a clear winner, there was very little to separate the remaining members of the big four, with just a 72p difference between runner-up Morrisons and fourth-placed Sainsbury’s.
Morrisons was cheapest for 15 products, four of which were exclusively cheapest. These included the most expensive item on our list, the bottle of Caorunn Scottish gin. Morrisons’ price of £27 was £1 cheaper than all of its rivals.
Tesco was £5.11 more expensive than Asda at £86.88, while Sainsbury’s total came in just 6p higher at £86.94. Sainsbury’s would actually have claimed second spot had it not been for the Lenor coming off promotion at £5 and returning to its usual price of £7. The other four retailers were all offering a £5 deal.
Waitrose came in more than a tenner more expensive than Asda at £92.14.
As well as being the cheapest, Asda was also the retailer running the most promotions. It had 11 items on deal compared with seven at Sainsbury’s, six for both Tesco and Waitrose, and Morrisons with only five offers.
