Tesco Hudl tablet

Tesco’s 7-inch, Android-based Hudl tablet will retail for £119

Tesco is to launch a 7-inch tablet computer called Hudl, amid a major marketing drive that will allow Clubcard holders to get their hands on one of the devices for potentially just £60-worth of points.

The launch – timed for the run-up to Christmas – will allow major reductions to the £119 full price via a promotion backed by a multimillion-pound ad campaign.

Tesco claimed at the launch today its new device would “beat hands down” any similarly priced rivals. The Hudl, designed in-house, features links to the retailer’s online shopping apps at the touch of a button and comes with its Blinkbox movies, TV and music line-up built in, as well  its Clubcard TV platform.

The Android-based device also links to more than a million apps available through the Google Play store. The 16GB Hudl, with a nine-hour battery life and HD screen, goes on sale in 1,000 larger stores and online next Monday.

“Hudl is a big part of Tesco’s future in an increasingly digital world,” said chief executive Philip Clarke.
