Vendors usually keep 50% of the cover price and will get the same deal from the listing at the Co-op

  • Sainsbury’s and McColl’s also recently announced they would stock the magazine

  • Co-op’s listing would provide the magazine with its biggest store distribution network yet, through up to 2,600 outlets

The Co-op has become the latest retailer to stock The Big Issue to support the homeless during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Co-op will match the 50% of cover price that usually goes to vendors selling the magazine on the street, something they are currently unable to do.

Sainsbury’s and McColl’s also recently announced they would stock the magazine, following a decision by The Big Issue to stop street sales over coronavirus safety concerns.

The Co-op said its listing would provide the magazine with its biggest store distribution network yet, through up to 2,600 outlets across the UK.

“Our income comes from street sales and without our vendors on the streets we cannot support those that really need us now and in the future,” said The Big Issue MD Russell Blackman.

“We are delighted with the support from the Co-op, which operates at the heart of communities across the UK. The money raised will help to secure the future of the magazine and make a real difference to the lives of our vendors around the country.

“You can also buy a magazine online or subscribe for three months whilst your vendor isn’t on the street.”

Co-op commercial director Matt Hood said: “Co-op has a key role to play in supporting our members, customers and colleagues, as well as those in our local communities. Inclusivity is at the heart of our culture and this is an example of us all co-operating and pulling together to help those most in need during this unprecedented time – every copy sold will make a difference.”
