There were no full baskets for a second week running, but a clear winner emerged in the shape of the “spotlessly clean and well ordered” Waitrose store in Buxton.

Despite being a small town centre store, our shopper was impressed that it “clearly made the absolute best of the space and managed to squeeze in an impressive range of quality and fresh-looking products”.

She was full of praise for the “polite staff who were happy to help and didn’t make you feel rushed”. There was one out-of-stock line and four not-stocked products.

Our shopper at Morrisons in Swindon described the store layout as “great” and also found the staff helpful, knowledgeable and in the case of the checkout operator “brilliant”. However, availability hurt its overall score, with three out-of-stock and six not-stocked lines.

Tesco in Stoke-on-Trent was “showing signs of age” and our shopper found the store layout confusing. Staff were all “tidy, well-presented and polite”. However, the availability score was low due to one out-of-stock and three not-stocked lines.

The staff at Sainsbury’s Farnborough were generally “polite and helpful” but our shopper felt there weren’t enough staff on the shop floor. The checkout operator spent the majority of the time chatting to a colleague.

Too many abandoned stocking trolleys got in the way of our shopper as she made her way around Asda Rayleigh. She had to push three out of the way herself in order to access the items she needed. The layout was “confusing”, she added.
