M&S’s pizzas have undergone a makeover in preparation for a relaunch of its Italian range next week.

M&S said more than 60% of the packaging in its pizzas had been stripped away, so almost 500 fewer tonnes of cardboard and 83 fewer tonnes of plastic would be used in the next year. Instead of a cardboard box, the pizzas would be wrapped in plastic with a cardboard strip displaying product information, which M&S said better showed off the product.

As well as less packaging to meet Plan A targets, cooking methods were also taken into account. The new gourmet pizzas have been wood-fired using chips of sustainable beech wood.
