A venison pizza, thought to be the first commercially available on a wide scale, will make its debut in Sainsbury’s stores in the first week of November.

The pizza has been developed by game processor Highland Game and Scottish-Italian pizza manufacturer Cosmo Pizza and will be launched into Scotland’s 18 leading Sainsbury’s stores. The 440g pizza, which is expected to retail at just under £4, will be topped with a tomato and redcurrant sauce, peppers, mozzarella and minced venison. The pizza highlights the versatility of venison, according to Highland Game MD Christian Nissen, who has ambitious plans to make venison mainstream.

“The consumer is just so fed up with your ordinary chicken, beef, lamb and pork,” he added. The pizza will be officially launched at the BBC Good Food Show in Scotland later this month.
