A former Tesco DC in Surrey leased by Amazon this week is unlikely to become the base for the launch of Amazon Fresh in the UK.
It was widely speculated this week that the 304,751 sq ft warehouse in Weybridge would be the gateway for the online giant’s debut of service next month.
However John Moxom, business development director of Clegg Group, which is refurbishing the site for owner Logicor, denied it was a food project. “People have put two and two together and made 137,” he said.
A spokesman for Logicor also suggested the reports had been wide of the mark. “There’s been a lot of speculation. It’s not all accurate,” he said.
An Amazon spokesman said: “We don’t comment on rumour and speculation.”
Amazon did say the site was Amazon Logistics’ 15th delivery station in the UK and would deliver to customers across Weybridge and the surrounding area. It also confirmed it was opening a 257,855 sq ft “new delivery and sortation station” in Bardon, Leicestershire, on a 10-year lease, serving the Midlands, to replace the existing smaller delivery depot in Castle Donington, which will close this autumn.
The move comes hard on the heels of the launch of Sunday deliveries, which Amazon said had grown by more than four times in the past year as a result of the introduction of Amazon Logistics - the technology and logistics platform that enables delivery companies across the UK to deliver Amazon parcels to customers every day.
