Asda has opened its first bakery concession at its store in St Austell as part of a wider revamp of its bakeries across the country.

The branded concession with local company Rowe's, which has supplied Asda for the past 15 years with own-label frozen savoury products, opened last week and offers sausage rolls, pasties and savoury pastries. It is manned by Rowe's staff.

Paul Pearce, Rowe's director of marketing, said there was the possibility of opening more concessions if this one took off.

Asda is also trialling a new bakery format in seven stores, with low shelving to allow customers to see into the bakery and a new range of artisan breads designed to appeal to customers preparing for dinner parties. If successful, the concept will be rolled out in 12 to 18 months.
