Anglo Beef Processors has closed its Blackburn abattoir as part of a national rationalisation process.

The move follows a major investment in its nearby site in Shrewsbury, and the recent acquisitions of sites in Dorset and Guildford. The abattoir, which closed last week, employed 30 people, all of whom have been offered alternative jobs within the ABP group.

A spokesman for ABP denied that the closure of Blackburn would limit its national coverage. "I don't think it means much of a gap in our coverage, which is still, by far, the widest in the UK."
