Waitrose has launched a new range of speciality aubergines, featuring Dutch-grown white aubergines and a “striking” purple and white striped variety.
The white aubergines, nicknamed “snowbergines”, are early varieties of aubergine grown in Holland. They are a similar shape to a regular aubergine, but are slightly smaller, creamier and milder in taste, according to the retailer.
The range will be available until the end of June in Waitrose stores nationwide at an rsp of £1.35 each, compared with 85p for a standard own-label aubergine.
The retailer is the first major supermarket to sell white and striped aubergines, according to Waitrose. However, white aubergines are also available from Abel & Cole (rsp: £2.09 each).
“Aubergines are particularly popular during the summer months as they are great for grilling,” said Waitrose vegetable buyer Jade Symonds. “It’s the perfect time to introduce a new speciality range of aubergines, which includes our ‘snowbergine’ as well as a striking purple and white striped variety.”
