3G Food Service, whose customers included restaurant chain Wagamama, has fallen into administration.

Administrator Baker Tilly has been appointed to sell its assets on behalf of creditors. "This has sent shockwaves through the industry because 3G was quite a big player and went under with no real warning," said one wholesaler.

Joint administrator Adrian Allen said: "3G Food Service is a nationwide frozen food distributor, supplying well-known restaurant and hotel chains. Our appointment is due to the business falling victim of tough market conditions, narrow profit margins and a decline in overall consumer demand in leisure and hospitality."

3G had ceased trading, with most staff made redundant, he added.

Foodservice providers were now scrambling to supply the caterers mainly independent businesses that had been left in the lurch by 3G's demise.

DBC Foodservice chairman Tarsem Dhaliwal revealed DBC had been in talks to buy the business in the week before it fell into administration but could not agree on a price. "3G had set itself some aggressive targets and ultimately it ran out of cash."

3G, based in Hull, was involved in a management buy-out in December led by MD Ben Smales and other members of his family.
