Greencore plans to send virtually zero waste to landfill across all its UK sites by the end of the year.

The own-label giant was minimising waste at source and where this was not possible encouraging segregation to maximise re-use and recycling, said group environmental manager James Cherry.

Eleven of its 12 sites were now sending virtually zero waste direct to landfill. Material recycling facilities were helping recover 50% to 70% of residual waste from glass sauce jars produced in Selby that would have otherwise gone to landfill, he added.
