Nisa member Metro Discount Stores is planning to open a tenth store in Derby in June and refurbish a further five stores over the next 18 months.
Ranked number 46 in The Grocer Top 50, the independent chain has invested £2m over the last two years developing its store portfolio.
Metro opened a new store in Burton-on-Trent 16 months ago and refurbished its stores in Hatton, Derbyshire, and Stapenhill, Staffordshire. The 6,000 sq ft revamped Hatton store has had a 17% uplift in sales and has become Metro’s flagship with a new entrance, refrigeration and additional space for fresh and chilled lines.
The investment has helped Metro’s turnover increase by 20.7% to £13.2m for the year ending June 2003, taking it into the Top 50 for the first time.
Metro director Graham Ainger said: “The new stores are performing well and the appearance of the refurbished stores has been a success. Extra lines have been incorporated into both and sales increases have resulted.”
