Safeway has added an average of 2p per litre to its petrol and diesel prices as of New Year's Day due to rising crude oil prices.

The supermarket will now charge an average of 74.9p a litre for its unleaded petrol.

Oil prices have reached a two-year high in the wake of an ongoing oil strike in Venezuela, the world's fifth biggest exporter.

Petrol prices could rise at other forecourts if the strike continues with the price hitting upwards of 80p per litre if war breaks out in Iraq, and production in neighbouring Saudi Arabia or Kuwait was affected.
