The axe is set to fall on Somerfield's distribution centre in East Kilbride as part of the chain's integration into The Co-op Group.

Logistics company Wincanton, which runs the site for the chain, is planning to close the site, affecting 200 jobs. It has started a 90-day consultation over the proposed phased closure, which it blamed on "the loss of volume resulting from the sale of Somerfield stores to other retailers". "Somerfield and Wincanton will continue to work together to ensure stores and customers continue to experience high service and availability," a Somerfield spokesman added.

Last week, Wincanton proposed 75 job cuts at Somerfield's Bridgwater depot following a fall in distribution volumes. Cuts will come from 400 warehouse, management and clerical roles. Last month London & Stamford Property acquired Somerfield's distribution site in Wellingborough.
