The nation’s leading scampi manufacturer has mapped out its entire supply chain using CarbonCloud’s platform and has calculated emissions at every stage

Whitby Seafoods has partnered with sustainability platform CarbonCloud to calculate its emissions and become what it is claiming is the first UK seafood product with a carbon footprint.

The nation’s leading scampi manufacturer has mapped out its entire supply chain using CarbonCloud’s technology and calculated the company’s emissions at every stage.

The data had given it “unprecedented insights into its emissions profile” and revealed that most of its products’ emissions came from the produce itself, with less than 2% coming from transportation.

“As the largest scampi manufacturer in the UK, we have a responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment,” said Edward Whittle, business development & climate change director at Whitby Seafoods.

“As a local, family business, we are passionate about ensuring the highest quality at every production stage and contributing to our community. It is a natural next step for us to calculate and monitor our footprint on our climate – because we care and need to, in equal parts.”

The company has worked to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2019, following a consultation with Carbon Trust. Since then, Whitby has moved to 100% green electricity purchases, moved its primary fryer from oil to electric, moved all company car purchasing from ICE to electric and invested in dry and frozen storage across sites to reduce the number of external stock movements.

It also intends to reduce its Scope 3 emissions through chairing the Scottish Nephrops Efficiency Working Group, which aims for the reduction of CO2e across the Scottish nephrops fleet and its partnership with MFV Golden Ray where the brand has reduced vessel emissions by 20%.

Whitby also intends to continue carrying out an investigation of competing net zero frameworks, including BRC Climate Roadmap and SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard.
