Nestlé Rowntree is to close its Mallow factory in Ireland with the loss of 57 jobs.
The closure is part of a move to streamline production of chocolate crumb, used in chocolate manufacture, and output of the ingredient will be doubled at Girvan, Scotland.
Chocolate supply chain manager Chas Hills said it no longer required both factories and unused plant facilities would be put into operation at Girvan with the creation of additional jobs: “This is good news for everyone at the Girvan factory. With the closure of Mallow, Girvan will be Nestlé Rowntree’s only chocolate crumb facility.”
Nestlé has an exclusive supply agreement with co-op First Milk, which will be supplying the additional volume for the manufacture of crumb.
