The drink is aged in a combination of five different woods

Irish whiskey brand Kinahan’s has claimed a world first with a new whiskey aged in ‘hybrid’ casks.

Its new whiskey, called The Kasc Project (43% abv) is aged in casks individually constructed from a mixture of five different types of wood: Portuguese oak, French oak, American oak, Hungarian oak and chestnut, which the brand said created “a blend of rich unusual new flavours”.

It was “an escape into the new ways of whiskey making”, said Kinahan’s MD Zak Oganian. “If you are a traditional whiskey drinker, this is not the whiskey for you. This is a daring and unconventional whiskey – it’s a riot of wood.”

It is billed as having notes of red plum, pear, tropical fruits and caramel spice on the nose, with ripe mango, chocolate caramel, sun-dried raisin and fig on the palate, and a finish of “gentle” nutmeg, orange, clove, honeycomb and pineapple.

The drink is available through distributor SEA Spirits, and has rolled into Master of Malt and The Good Spirits Co (rsp: £34.95/70cl).
