Aldi is to switch some 20 million still wines to ultra-lightweight bottles.
The retailer has worked with its wine suppliers and bottling partner Greencroft to move wines including its Grapevine Sauvignon Blanc and Grapevine Merlot over to the new lightweight bottles.
It takes the average weight of wine bottles sold in Aldi from 409g down to 371g.
The move forms part of a broader initiative, which has seen the supermarket gradually reduce bottle weights since 2022.
The changes had resulted in the equivalent of 12.7 million empty bottles being removed from circulation each year, Aldi said.
“We’re always looking for practical ways to reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to deliver the unbeatable quality and value our customers expect,” said Luke Emery, national sustainability director at Aldi UK.
“By working closely with our wine suppliers, we’re introducing a simple yet impactful change that’s already cutting down on materials and associated carbon,” he continued. “It’s one of the many steps we’re taking as we continue to explore how we can continue to reduce bottle weights across our range and make our products more sustainable over time.”
Earlier this year, Aldi launched the UK’s first own-brand wine in an aluminium bottle.
Its Costellore Pinot Grigio (rsp: £5.99/75cl) weighs just 95g and is 75% lighter than traditional glass, as well as being fully recyclable.
