Gluten-free and special nutrition foods producer Dr Schär has announced its transition to 100% cage-free eggs across its production sites worldwide, including its two in the UK.
The business, which has nearly 2,000 employees in 12 countries, said the result confirms its long-standing commitment to responsible sourcing.
Dr Schär began the transition in 2016, and it will be completed at the end in November thanks to gradual implementation, supplier collaboration and continuous audits.
The move ensures “high standards of quality, animal welfare and sustainability throughout the supply chain”.
“Achieving the exclusive use of cage-free eggs in all our sites represents a key milestone in Dr Schär’s vision,” said Hannes Berger, CEO of Dr Schär. “This is not just a production milestone, but a concrete commitment to a more sustainable future, combining quality, animal welfare and responsibility toward our consumers.
“We will continue to innovate and guide the value chain, demonstrating that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand.”

According to the business, the move is part of a welfare-conscious approach that has been increasingly valued by customers across Europe, pointing to European Consumer Research which showed 90% of consumers support stricter animal welfare laws.
Meanwhile, more than a third of all hens on the continent are still raised in enriched cages, which are permitted under European regulation.
