Greggs has begun a trial of its first Greggs Express unit, a self-service solution providing customers with more “convenience and speed”.

The first Greggs Express unit opened this month and is operated by the food-to-go chain’s franchise partner Motor Fuel Group (MFG).

Located within MFG’s petrol forecourt outside Glasgow Airport, the unit offers customers a range of Greggs products including savoury bakes, sweet treats and Fairtrade hot drinks seven days a week.

The trial, which will assess customer behaviour and response to the self-service offer, will see a small number of units rolled out across travel hub locations operated by MFG over the coming months.

“Greggs Express is our latest concept being trialled to help us enhance our customer experience, focusing on convenience and speed,” said Greggs property director Tony Rowson. “The units will allow customers to grab their favourite bake or serve coffee themselves, ideal for customers on the move.

“Working with MFG, the trial will help us understand how this format can support our growth ambitions alongside our broader estate growth plans, while continuing to deliver the great-tasting food and value our customers expect.”

It follows the launch of the retailer’s ‘Bitesize Greggs’ format in November, which looks to offer products to more customers in high-footfall locations that are constrained by space. This concept is still being trialled, with three Bitesize shops now open.
