More than 3,000 employee communication headsets have been rolled out to stores

Spar has completed a multi-year rollout of staff headsets across 500 stores throughout the UK and Ireland.

More than 3,000 employee communication headsets have been rolled out to stores, in what the device vendor Quail Digital has called the largest rollout of its kind in the UK convenience sector.

The headsets are now in use in around one in five Spar stores across the two markets, and staff in them “now exchange thousands of communications each day”, Quail Digital said.

“There has been a great improvement to store efficiency,” said Dave Pickford from Spar wholesaler James Hall & Co. “If we were to take away the headsets now, our employees wouldn’t be happy. It’s been a great success.”

Store teams use the digital communication system to co-ordinate replenishment, respond to customer requests, and talk to each other on the shop floor.

The headset system has also been integrated with technology that alerts colleagues when repeat shoplifting offenders enter the store, enabling teams to communicate discreetly and request assistance immediately when required.

Quail Digital has since been appointed as a preferred supplier of Spar International, making it a recommended technology partner for Spar organisations globally.

“Communication underpins almost every activity that takes place inside a supermarket, yet many retailers are still relying on systems that were never designed for today’s retail environment,” said Tom Downes, founder and CEO of Quail Digital.

“The best communication is the communication nobody has to think about. When technology simply works, colleagues can focus on serving customers, supporting one another and keeping the store running smoothly,” he added.
